Job Description Summary:

The Head of Japanese Accounting & Finance will be responsible for overseeing all financial operations in Japan, including accounting, financial reporting, tax compliance, and assisting in budgeting and forecasting. This role will collaborate with the global finance team and ensure that financial practices comply with all Japanese and US regulations as well as all corporate policies. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in Japanese accounting standards (J-GAAP), US GAAP, tax laws, and financial management within a multinational organization.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Responsible for the Japanese revenue accounting close and reporting process, ensuring adherence to U.S. GAAP, internal controls, and the company’s policies for accurate and timely revenue reporting.
  • Establish and optimize revenue recognition policies and practices in alignment with organizational objectives and in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Directly responsible for overseeing the full order to cash process for all Japanese sales.
  • Manage and perform the Japanese month-end and quarter-end close process, including preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, related analysis to align with US closing timelines.
  • Work directly on 3PL and distribution implementations to assure an infrastructure is established that will comply with accounting standards and adhere to all SOX internal controls.
  • Prepare, analyze, and present periodic financial statements, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and adherence to international accounting standards.
  • Develop comprehensive technical reports ensuring compliance with both J-GAAP and US GAAP standards.
  • Adhere to all internal controls to safeguard assets, ensure accurate financial reporting, and support audit activities.
  • Stay updated with evolving financial regulations, ensuring that the organization remains compliant with all local and international accounting standards and regulations.
  • Collaborate with Tax partners to provide guidance and support for direct and indirect tax considerations in Japan.
Requirements and Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • A professional accounting qualification such as CPA, or equivalent.
  • Experience working for a US based public company is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in finance and accounting, preferably in the Pharmaceutical/Biotech industry
  • Strong knowledge of corporate finance and other accounting theory, principles and practices, including J-GAAP, IFRS and US GAAP.
  • Prior experience in an international setting.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Fluent in English and Japanese.
  • Self-motivated, flexible, able to prioritize, multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment with fluctuating priorities and deadlines. Able to make things happen with minimum supervision and to work independently and effectively as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Willingness and ability to work hands-on with administrative tasks, as well as leading large projects with strategic oversight.
